Do yourself a favour

Seeing a psychotherapist is a not a sign of weakness or being crazy. Instead, it shows that you are serious about your own well being and personal growth.

Effective therapists accept you, no matter what your personal circumstances, beliefs, or quirks.

To help you decide if I’m right for you, find out more about me and my approach in these pages.

I hope that we can work together soon to help you achieve your goals!

When I started in Psychology more than 20 years ago, I wanted therapy to be a unique experience. Both educational and therapeutic, with a healthy dose of open-mindedness and acceptance.

Over the years of helping people develop their lives, relationships, and careers, those principles have proven their worth time and again. I’m looking forward to helping you too!

My Approach

Real Change

My approach is to help you adopt new and more goal-directed behaviours that get you more of what you want and less of what you don’t.

While therapy should help you feel better, I also help my clients get better.

My therapeutic method, REBT, accomplishes just that.

Inclusivity

Acceptance, tolerance, and open-mindedness are not just buzz-words. They are the foundations of my practice.

I specialise in working with people who sometimes feel that they don’t fit in, aren’t always accepted by those around them, and who challenge convention.

Evidence-based

There is a science to behaviour change and helping people who are struggling. I’ve been actively involved in that science for 20 years now.

My approach is transparent, easy to understand and can be applied to real life challenges.

My Practice

My practice is face-to-face and virtual. You can book an in-person session at my practice at Mentis Health, 12 CP Brand Avenue, Melkbosstrand.

Or, select an online session to see me from your home, workplace or anywhere you are in the world.

My speciality areas:

Adult Psychotherapy

I see adults who are dealing with depression, anger, anxiety, phobias, and interpersonal struggles.

Please note that I do not see children or teenagers, but will happily refer you to colleagues who do.

LGTBQ+ Community

Over the years I have helped clients from the LGTBQ+ community with challenges unique to alternative sexual orientations and gender identity.

Just to be clear: I do not support, condone or agree with any therapy that is based on intolerance of sexual orientation or alternative, diverse gender identity.

Addiction

If you are struggling with addiction of any kind, don’t lose hope.

The REBT approach has been shown to be highly effective at helping folks with addiction challenges. Drop me a line.

Sport & Performance Psychology

If you want to take your game to the next level, the answers are probably in your mind, not your body.

Speak to me if you want to supercharge your sporting performance using the science of sport psychology.

Career Coaching

Apart from my work in behaviour change and psychotherapy, I have also worked extensively in the fields of career change, talent assessment, and executive coaching.

My approach to career coaching takes this real-world experience into account in helping adults develop their leadership skills and prepare for the next level in their careers.

My Therapeutic Philosophy

I use an evidence-based, effective method of therapy known as Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT).

REBT is a form of cognitive behavioural therapy that has been shown to be effective in treating a variety of psychological problems.

My approach is to help my clients get better rather than just feel better.  To do that requires mutual work between the therapist, and client. You’ll be encouraged to examine your thinking and feelings, experiment with new approaches, and really get stuck into moving towards, rather than away from your personal goals.

In addition to REBT, I incorporate an existential view of our situation as humans. What that means is simply having a mature, realistic view of life’s challenges, facing problems with dignity and compassion.

Myths that Hold you Back

There are quite a few myths about emotions that hold people back from getting better rather than just feeling better. In this article I take a look at them and how REBT provides healthier alternatives.

The ABCDEs of REBT

REBT is a structured, action-oriented therapy that provides people with real-world tools and frameworks to get better, rather than just feel better. In this article, I discuss the most powerful tool of them all: The ABC (and D and Es) of REBT.

Must Life be Fair?

While it would be great if life were fair, many people insist that it must be fair. This demand can create untold misery in one’s life. In this article I discuss why that is and how to avoid it.

Why Positive Thinking Doesn’t Work

In this article, I take a sceptical look at the power of positive thinking. Why is it so popular, yet also so seemingly powerless in solving emotional problems? Read on for an alternative perspective!
